Harford Waste Disposal Center Landfill Cell N-1
In the summer of 2010 Dixie Construction Company, Inc. was awarded the contract to create a new Cell at the Harford Waste Disposal Center located in Harford County Maryland in the city of Street. The project was performed for the Harford County Department of Public Works. Dixie Construction is one of the few contractors pre-qualified to perform such contracts. Dixie is now on their third landfill in as many years.
The purpose of the project is to create a new “lined” Cell to receive solid municipal waste in conformance with all Maryland Department of the Environment regulations. The project has been scheduled to take the past twelve months to complete. Dixie is currently bringing the project to a close as of September 1st 2012. The scope of the project included excavating 645,000 cubic yards of material of which 80,000 cubic yards of rock were blasted, removed, crushed and re-used on site utilizing Dixie Constructions Recycling Division which include rock crushers and screeners and mountains of rock. Also involved will be all divisions that Dixie employs from Clearing and Excavation to Underground Utilities and Asphalt Paving.
Some highlights of the project include underground placement of 5,000 linear feet of leachate collection piping, 6,000 linear feet of gas header piping to vent fumes from solid waste. Two $600,000 leachate collection tanks. 45,000 cubic yards of clay imported to act as an impervious barrier under the geo synthetic liner. Placement of 612,000 square feet or 14 acres of geo-synthetic, geo-membrane black liner. 30,000 tons of stone placed on top of the liner for drainage and capped off with a soil layer and compacted. There were also three testing methods employed to assure that the geo-synthetic liner passed all requirements and durability tests. They included non-destructive, destructive and electric leak detection. Dixie is proud of its performance in completing this project and invites other agencies and municipalities to contact us for their future projects.
