PICTURE OF THE MONTH
Laurel sand and Gravel

A rare sight would be all of this equipment sitting still at the same time. Taken at Laurel Sand and Gravel in Laurel, Maryland, on a nice November afternoon. The equipment has just been lined up after the day shift just finished. Some 30-40 workers are headed up the road while just as many are headed down to the job to start the night shift. The equipment is lined up like this on every DIXIE jobsite no matter the size so that daily service and maintenance can be carried out. Out of site of this picture are probably another dozen pieces of equipment closer to the jobsite entrance and the small army of mechanics, welders and service personal that descend on this jobsite twice daily. Thanks guys for all your hard work!

WHAT'S NEW
Check out the latest happenings with Dixie....

RECYCLE- Always on the lookout to conserve and recycle, DIXIE has taken yet another step towards recycling...another byproduct of our industry. For as long as there has been an engine there has been used motor oil. And for a construction company the size of DIXIE, used motor oil is just a fact of life. A very large fact of life as it turns out. Consider the huge quantities of motor oil it takes to fill a single site dump. And multiply that by a couple of hundred other pieces of equipment in the same size and class. And in some phase of a service cycle and the gallons start adding up quickly on a daily basis. In the past our service trucks would collect the used oil and take it to a recycle center. Now we use all of it, in house, to fire a waste oil, forced air, heat furnace (see picture) to heat our shop bay facilities during the frigid Maryland winters. No more LP gas, hot in one spot, cool in another. Now it’s hot and warm everywhere you stand. DIXIE likes them so much that we have chosen to place another unit in one of our satellite shop locations as well. Just another way DIXIE tries to stay green.

POWER- Dixie’s new Mack tractor trailer epitomizes the power needed to compete in today’s expanding construction industry...

This will be Dixie’s second "America" themed tractor trailer. Which will already join a fleet of three other large Mack Tractor and trailers. As well as two Mack Rollback equipment movers. In this way we can expedite large and small equipment more quickly and economically to the jobsite. Purchased last fall and professionally painted by the same company who painted Dixie’s sponsored dragster. Dixie now moves equipment all over the middle Atlantic states. And it was a wise investment to be sure. We seem to be moving equipment day and night. Look for the red, white, and blue in a town near you.

UTILITY- Dixie just purchased yet another two (2) more CAT Excavator 345B for it’s continually expanding Utility division....
To meet the demands of production Dixie has purchased another two (2) more CAT 345B excavators. This now brings our total of 345B’s to six (6). Not to mention the nine (9) CAT 330 Excavators already working on jobsites right now We have miles upon miles of pipe to lay and large and deep excavations that must be dug and the only way to do it quickly and efficiently is to use larger more powerful machines. And they don’t get much bigger and nicer than the CAT 345B. Capable of filling a site dump in a matter of minutes, the CAT 345B is the definition of utility.

SKY ROCKETING- Fuel Prices are going through the roof. And Dixie is actively monitoring it’s effects on our industry...

Can you believe the price of gas? This seems to be the topic of conversation for nearly everyone you meet. With no real decreases in prices in sight. Dixie has continually set the example for monitoring and reporting fuel consumption of it’s fleet. We are able to tell on a daily basis the consumption levels right down to the pick-up truck or piece of equipment. We will continue to monitor the prices of gas and fuel at our local distributors. And direct our crews to these locations for additional savings which can then be passed along to our clients.

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
Dave Kelly
Master Diesel Mechanic

A BIG congratulations goes to Dave Kelly for being our first 2008 Employee of the Month. Dave is a certified Master Diesel Mechanic through the Ford Motor Company certification division. And according to some that know Dave well, a magician who just happens to be able to fix engines. And we consider ourselves lucky to call him a friend and employee. Dave is in at the crack of dawn six days a week for at least twelve hours a day if not longer. And never a complaint. Day in and day out whatever happens to land in Dave’s “operating” bay, he manages to fix without fail. And that’s quite an accomplishment when you consider in a typical day, Dave can see anything from a sheep’s foot roller to a CAT 365 Excavator and all manor of crew cab pick up truck and tandem dump truck in between. A typical scene in Dave’s bay will be two F250 Crew cabs on floor jacks an F550 service body and probably a heavy piece of equipment or a Mack tandem dump. Leave and come back four hours later and a completely different set of units have taken their place. Mostly preventative maintenance but every once in awhile we get a hard case in there for Dave’s edification.

Dave has been with DIXIE a little over four years and say’s that he really enjoys working here and that his coworkers are a really great group of individuals to work with. It’s a tight knit group that sits down together everyday for lunch. Always willing to lend a hand to one another they often use lunch to discuss one another’s projects and will often collaborate to finish a rush order to get a piece of equipment back out there into the fleet moving material again. In Dave’s off time he enjoys spending time with his family and close friends. He takes great joy in spending time, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle whenever the weather cooperates. And has dabbled in different types of motor sports over the years. And says that he looks forward to many more years of adventure here at DIXIE. Thanks Dave.
